Srinagar: A fierce encounter ensued between militants holed up in a house and security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara, official sources said here. They said on a tip-off about the presence of militants, security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint search operation in a populated area at Langate, Handwara, in the frontier district of Kupwara in the wee hours today. The entire village was cordoned off and all exit points were sealed to foil any attempt by militants to escape. With the first light this morning, security forces launched a search operation in the particular area of the village, they said, adding that militants hiding there opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons and also hurled hand grenades. Forces immediately took positions and retaliated fire ensuing a fierce encounter. Intermittent firing was on when the reports last came in, the sources said. There could be two to three militants hiding in the area. Further details are awaited. Recently, militants had attacked a police station and also injured a Border Security Force (BSF) in Handwara area of Kupwara district. (Agencies)
