This refers to article Ferozpur Nallah turned into garbage dump (Daily Excelsior 15.5.2019). It is so unfortunate that officials of Directorate of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir more particularly the Municipal Committee Magam who are supposed to treat waste as per Municipal Solid Waste Rules 2016 guidelines are themselves dumping it inside a stream of gushing water of Ferozpur nallah. District Administration , Director ULB Kashmir and particularly the Deputy Commissioner of Budgam must take this issue very seriously. It is the duty of DC Budgam to identify land for the scientific landfill site (dumping ground), but from last 10 years successive DC’s have failed to identify land for dumping of solid waste near Magam. There is a huge Karewa land near Sanoor Kalipora village where a modern landfill site can be created. It is not only the issue of Magam town but same is the situation in Chadoora, Beeru , Budgam, Khansahib and Charar Sharief towns where there is no scientific landfill site and local municipalities dump the waste either in water bodies or thrown the same down into gorges or agriculture land.
In Budgam town a private agency (NGO) was hired few years back who were doing good work by collecting segregated waste from each household and then treating it at a site created by local Municipality but Director ULB Kashmir stopped that project . Our own officials are the biggest hurdle in good work as they don’t want to do any work unless they get commission for the same. It is urged upon Governor , his advisors and Chief Secretary to take solid waste management issue very seriously otherwise we will lose all our water bodies , rivers and nallahas in the next 5 to 10 years
