Father of White Revolution

Dr. Verghese Kurien is known as the ‘Father of White Revolution’ in India. He has immensely contributed in the dairy sector and is also called as the milkman of India. He was born on 26th of November, 1921 in an affluent Christain family at Kozhikode, Kerala. Dr. Kurien made India the world’s largest milk producer from a milk-deficient nation and increased milk output four fold. He gave the billion litre idea and launched the world’s largest agricultural development programme. India surpassed the United States of America in 1998 as the world’s largest producer of milk. Dr. Verghese Kurien founded Amul, one of the largest milk producing companies in the world. Dr. Kurien was the founder and chairman of Amul.
He build Amul as a highly successful indigenous brand from a little town called as Anand in Gujarat. He made Anand the milk capital of India. Former Indian Prime Minister,  Lal Bahadur Shastri created National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) based on the Amul’s work model. Dr. Kurien took over as the chairman of NDDB and launched Operation Flood programme in 1970 which is known as the world’s biggest dairy development programme.
Dr.  Kurien was awarded with Ramon Magsaysay Award, Padma Shri Award, Padma Bhushan Award, Padma Vibhushan Award, Krushi Ratna Award, World Food Prize Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University, International Person of the Year Award and 12 honorary degrees. His endless efforts have alleviated millions of rural people out of poverty.Dr. Kurien will always be remembered for his contribution in the dairy sector.
