Farmers on 24 hour hunger strike

KATHUA, May 15: Farmers in Kathua belt today started 24 hour hunger strike in front of DC office here to protest against the failure of State Government to make assessment of losses suffered by them during the Rabi Season.
The hunger strike was started by J&K Kissan Tehreek which is an affiliated body of All India Kissan Sabha. About 100 farmers drawn from different parts of Kathua district participated in hunger strike which will be followed by massive demonstration tomorrow.
The district president of the Kissan Tehreek, Hans Raj who is heading the hunger strike said that the State Government has failed to make any assessment of the losses suffered by farmers of their Rabi crop during recent rains and hailstorm. He said the Government is totally sleeping over the issue and the farmers are in distress as their entire Rabi crop was perished in rains.
He demanded that the Government should declare its policy on farmers and pay compensation for the losses suffered by them of both Kharif as well as Rabi crops.
He warned in case the Government does not settle the issue the farmers will be forced to launch agitation.
