RAJOURI, June 8: A woman who was shifted to a ventilator after allegedly being administered a ‘wrong injection’ at Government Medical College (GMC) and Associated Hospital Rajouri died on Monday morning, triggering strong protests by her family members, relatives and public who demanded registration of an FIR and the arrest of the staff allegedly responsible for the incident.
The deceased, identified as Nusrat Jahan, wife of Mohd Ashraf, had been admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at GMC Rajouri. According to her family, doctors had earlier advised that certain medicines and injections should not be administered to the patient. However, they alleged that despite these instructions, an injection was administered by the staff on duty on Saturday evening, leading to a severe adverse reaction.
Family members claimed that soon after receiving the injection, Nusrat Jahan lost consciousness and her condition deteriorated rapidly. She was immediately shifted to a ventilator and remained under treatment until she succumbed on Monday morning. Following her death, grieving relatives staged a protest at the hospital premises, alleging medical negligence and demanding strict action against those responsible.
Amid growing public concern over the incident, Principal GMC Rajouri, Dr AS Bhatia, constituted a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the patient’s death. The committee, headed by Medical Superintendent Dr Shamim Ahmed, comprises Dr Vidushi Badial, Head of the ENT Department, the Administrative Officer of GMC Rajouri, and Dr Javid Iqbal, Deputy Medical Superintendent.
The committee has been directed to conduct a comprehensive investigation by examining all medical records, treatment protocols, investigation reports, nursing records and other relevant documents. It will also record statements of doctors, nursing staff, paramedical personnel and other concerned officials to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. The inquiry panel has been tasked with identifying any negligence, procedural lapses, deficiencies or omissions in patient care and fixing responsibility wherever negligence, misconduct or dereliction of duty is established. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three days along with recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, pending inquiry, Medical Superintendent Dr Shamim placed two healthcare workers under suspension. The suspended employees are Tahira Hussain, Junior Staff Nurse, and Fauzia Farzana, Female Multipurpose Health Worker. During the suspension period, both employees will remain attached to the office of the Medical Superintendent. They have also been instructed to cooperate with the investigation.
