Family members of Uri terror attack martyrs to be felicitated during mass wedding

AHMEDABAD: The family members of the 20 martyred army men of the Uri terror attack will be felicitated and given financial assistance during a philanthropic mass marriage ceremony of 236 ‘fatherless’ girls to be held in Surat on December 25.

Widows of the 16 army men (who were married) and mothers of the remaining four martyrs (bachelor ones) will be handed over the cheques from the money collected during a dyro (Gujarati folk music event), a day before the marriage and will be seated on the stage during the marriage ceremony ‘Dikari Dil No Divo’ (Daughter is the light of the heart).

The function was being organised by well known PP Savani family from Surat which has the distinction of creating many records by doing Kanyadan of almost 472 fatherless brides till date.       The widows of martyrs will also be involved in religious rituals and lightening of lamp in the ceremony breaking the superstitious tradition as a mark of respect to them.

A Guinness World Record was created during the mass marriage last time regarding the mass Mehandi event. Many other records were also created during the previous versions of such annual group marriage events being held since 2007. Interestingly flower petals were showered by a chopper during the event. It would be done this year also.

Addressing a press conference here, Mahesh Savani, head of the PP Savani group who plays the role of the father of the brides and who has been praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his initiatives, said, ”In this year’s group marriage two sons of Savani family (his son Mitul and cousin Jay) will also get married. So, there will be in all 238 marriages and an equal number of sweets will be prepared for the guests which in turn will also be a record of sorts. With this event, total number of brides whose Kanyadan is done by our family will reach at 708.

He said the financial assistance to the martyr’s families will not be less than Rs 5 to 6-lakh each. (AGENCIES)
