Eye donation

While considering a PIL seeking establishment of eye bank in the State, the Division Bench has asked the Government to submit status report in regard to the matter in the State. The petitioner has made a plea that there does not exist any eye bank in the State while such banks have been incepted in other States in the country. The petitioner claimed that the only eye bank in the State was closed down in 1994 and presently no eye bank or eye donation centre is existing. There is a huge population of blind people who could be restored eyesight if there were donors of eyes after their death. The court has asked for the status report and the AAG pleaded that the Government be given more time to come up with the desired report.
It is a fact that the Government has not been paying full attention to propagating among the people to voluntarily offer donation of their eyes for the blind people. Government cannot force the matter but it can through public awareness campaigns convince them to make donation of their eyes. Around 34589 eyes were collected and 13887 eye transplants were performed successfully in the country in the year 2008. But no collection was made in the State. One can hope that there will be palpable response of the people once they are educated on the need of donating their eyes that would restore eyesight to the blind people. It is a philanthropic act and civilised countries all over the world have established eye banks and registered eye donors. We should also follow the suit.
