Extortionist held with toy pistol

SRINAGAR, July 27: Police today claimed to have arrested an extortionist in a village in Pulwama who threatened people using a toy pistol and a tear smoke shell and extorted cash from them.
A police spokesman said the extortionist, identified as Aijaz Ahmad Shah alias Bilal, Suhail and Molvi of Fakeer Mohalla Tral, allegedly extorted money from Panchayat members and other civilians in the district.
“Last week, we received information that a person posing as terrorist is threatening Panchs, Sarpanchs and other civilians and is extorting money from them. We started investigation in this regard and activated sources in the area,” the spokesman said.
He said on Saturday evening on a tip off, police along with Army and CRPF arrested Shah at village Chakora in Pulwama.
During interrogation, a toy pistol, a tear smoke grenade and cash worth Rs 50,000, and a mobile phone he used during commission of the offence were recovered from him, the spokesman said.
Police claimed that Shah confessed to extorting money from some locals, besides Panchayat members while posing as terrorists during night.
The spokesman said police has registered an FIR number 179/2014 under Section 382 RPC, 7/25 I. A. Act and investigation is going on.
