Excise sleuths confiscate vehicles, arrest drivers evading toll

KATHUA, Oct 23: The Excise Department sleuths during routine checking at Gandyal Village notified as Toll Post in early morning hours, intercepted two vehicles bearing Registration Nos.PB04V-0323 & PB35N-9117 carrying sand illegally with malafide intentions to evade the toll.
The Excise Department team led by ETOs, Varinder Gupta and Aamir Ayaiz Rather laid nakas at different points and chased the tax evading vehicles in a calculated and strategic manner on established Toll Post Gandyal. The accused drivers had a scuffle with the Excise team but eventually were apprehended and the vehicles were confiscated by the team and brought to Toll Post Lakhanpur.
Accordingly, the proceedings under Sections 3 & 8 of the J&K Levy of Tolls Act, 1995, were initiated and demand notices were issued to owners and drivers of the vehicles against Rs. 4,51,220/- which includes basic toll and toll on goods and fine.
Whole operation was monitored by Ashish Kumar Gupta, Deputy Excise Commissioner, Toll Post Lakhanpur under overall guidance of Excise Commissioner, Talat Parvez Rohella. It is worthwhile to mention here that the Deputy Excise Commissioner, Toll Post Lakhanpur has been very particular against these smugglers and toll evaders. Deputy Excise Commissioner appreciated the efforts of the staff in nabbing the tax evaders and warned them to desist from making such attempts in future.
