Srinagar, Aug 20: Indicating lack of coordination between different departments functioning at Lower Munda toll post the officials of the two departments entered into a physical fight over the issue of checking of vehicles.
Sources said that the fight between the officials of excise and the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) triggered after the former allegedly objected to checking of overloaded vehicles near the post. Police have taken cognizance of the matter and has started investigations.
The Excise Department is meant to collect the toll from vehicles plying on the highway while as the MVD is meant to check the excessive load. As per the rules an official of the MVD is supposed to be accommodated at the excise department post for checking the excessive carriage.
Sources said that the officials of the two departments entered into a brawl after the excise officials allegedly refused to allow the officials of MVD to be at the post. “The verbal duel later turned into physical fight between the officials. After entering into a fight officials of both the departments lodged complaint with the police,” sources said.
Sources said that the police have initiated investigations into the matter. “We are verifying the credentials of the complaints of the officials of both the departments,” police sources said.
Meanwhile sources said that the toll post has become a boon for the officials of the various departments including excise and MVD. “While excise officials resort to overcharging of the truckers plying on the highway the MVD officials let all the overweight truckers go against the huge sums. The post has become the gold mine for the officials,” sources alleged.
DC Excise, Tassaduq Hussain, said that he will look into the complaints of overcharging. “I will personally visit the area tomorrow to look into the complaints. Besides I will also see to what has made the two departments fight,” he said.
