Exams postponed, colleges closed

SRINAGAR, Oct 22 : The shutdown called by separatists against the killing of civilians in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district disrupted normal life today with clashes breaking out at several places in Valley.
Separatists had called for the shutdown today and a march to Lal Chowk tomorrow to protest the killings in Laroo village of Kulgam where seven civilians were killed in a blast.
Scores of youth took to streets at Redwani and Khudwani and clashed with deployments of security forces. They also pelted stones on 1-RR camp at Redwani. Security forces fired tear gas and pellets in which one person was injured.
The clashes between youth and security forces broke out at Fruit Mandi Parimpora, Narbal, Kushipora HMT, Khaiwani Eidgah, Saidpora Safakadal, Ban Mohalla, Fateh Kadal, Footbridge Parimpora, Noorbagh, Eidgah, Padshahibagh, Natipora, Nawabazar, Mehjoornagar bridge, Khumani Chowk Bemina, Lal Bazar, Budshah Mohalla Lalbazar, Lawaypora, Sabzi Mandi Soura, Old Barzulla, Rambagh, Saderbal Kanitar Hazratbal, Rawalpora, Old Chanapora, Kralpora, Manchowa, Kadalbal Pampore, Safakadal, 90-feet Soura, Qazibagh Khan Sahab Budgam, Shilwat Sumbal, Dangerpora, Sumbal, Safapora and Ashijipora Anantnag.
Amid clashes in several parts, shops and other commercial establishments were closed in Kashmir and public transport was off the roads and train service remained suspended for today.
And restrictions will be imposed in Old City of Srinagar and parts of the uptown here tomorrow in wake of a protest march to Lal Chowk called by seperatists.
Fearing law and order situation in view of the protest march to Lal Chowk tomorrow, authorities today decided to impose restrictions under Section 144 Cr PC in the volatile old city areas falling under the jurisdiction of Police stations Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Safa Kadal, Rainawari and Khanyar.
Partial curbs will also be imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of police stations Kralkhud, Maisuma and Shaheed Gunj to prevent the protest march.
Meanwhile, police said that traffic will not be allowed between Regal Chowk and Amira Kadal on the Residency Road in Srinagar tomorrow in view of security situation.
“In view of security restrictions in Srinagar on 23rd of October 2018, traffic will not be allowed to ply on Regal Chowk-Amira Kadal Bridge Road stretch,” said the SSP Traffic.
He requested the commuters to use the alternate routes to reach their destinations. “Any inconvenience caused is highly regretted,” he said.
The University of Kashmir has also announced that all examinations scheduled on tomorrow have been postponed. “The examination of the papers of BG 4th Semester/ B.ED 3rd & 4th Semester/ M.A. Private 3rd/ 4th Semester/BE 2nd Semester which was scheduled to be held on Tuesday 23-10-2018 has been rescheduled,” said a varsity spokesperson in a statement.
He said the revised date sheet is available on the university website.
The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora also said the class work will remain suspended tomorrow.
Meanwhile, fearing any trouble, authorities have decided to close all schools and degree colleges in Srinagar and Kulgam districts.
Meanwhile, the district administration Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Bandipora, Baramulla and Sopore have also decided to close the degree colleges and higher secondary schools in the district.
District administration Kupwara has decided to suspend class work in all colleges and higher secondary schools tomorrow except Keran, Karnah and Machil areas.
The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to avoid law and order situation.
