Ex-servicemen demand exemption of Toll Tax

JAMMU, June 1: Chairman ESM Cell of the DSSP, Col J.P Singh (Retd) has appealed to the Governor to exempt Toll Tax to the Veterans (Ex-servicemen) at Ban Toll Plaza on Jammu-Udhampur National Highway.
He said that ex-servicemen frequently travel on this highway to visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super-Specialty Hospital Kakryal for treatment as ECHS referred cases.
“Light vehicles are charged Rs 135 as one way Toll. Both ways it costs Rs 270 to the veterans when they go to the Hospital for treatment, consultations or diagnostic tests,” the Chairman maintained.
He further said that 15 such trips a month will cost them Rs. 4,050 while 20 such trips will cost Rs. 5400 to the aging pensioners of the armed forces majority of whom get between Rs 20,000 to 25000 as monthly pension.
“Moreover it is difficult to afford Toll Tax for a veteran with meagre pension if their family is wholly dependent upon their pension, which invariably is the case in J&K, because of lack of job opportunities to the Jammu people,” Col J.P Singh said.
