ITANAGAR: Spiritual leader Shri Shri Ravi Shankar today advocated for ethical and moral education to change the mindset of people and to root out corruption from the state.
Speaking on “political ethics and challenges in the context of changing times” here, Shri Shri said that commitment of the politicians should percolate down to the lower level of administration so that corruption could be minimised and developmental projects completed as per schedule.
Ravi Shankar who arrived here this morning on a four-day visit to the state further called upon the elected representatives to ponder on whether politics is a profession, a service, for self interest or for welfare of the people.
“Over the years respect for politician has been decreasing. It is a bad sign. Politicians are people who should connect with people and work for their welfare,” he said.
“To be a politician is a great pride and honour,” he said.
The main motto of politicians should be to bring happiness among the people but happiness has taken a back seat of late.
“If you win the hearts of the people they will give you everything to function properly in your respective areas. You should create an environment where people will have faith in you and vote for you,” he added.
He said, there would be no corruption when sense of oneness and belongingness prevail between politician and the people.
Responding to queries, the spiritual leader said that a system need to be followed to change the work culture and officials should stick to it despite all odds.
“There should be certain leniency in the laid down system with strict adherence to its legality. Sometime rules can be made flexible for betterment of the society,” he said adding with changing time, opinion and ideas changes.
To another question on politicians changing parties after being elected in the state, the spiritual leader said, “Changing party for ideology and good governance is good but changing party for vested interest is dangerous as it will lead to disrespect for the politician by the voters who. They will discard him later.”
Shri Shri would attend an inter-faith cultural programme at Indira Gandhi Park here in the evening and tomorrow he would go to Ziro in Lower Subansiri district for a Puja and public meeting at the Siddheshwar Nath Temple.
On September 10 he will be in Tawang and would attend the Maitree Diwas program being organized by the chief minister.
Maitree Diwas is celebrated to promote closer ties between the Army and the civilians. It and is being held after a gap of seven years. (AGENCIES)
