SRINAGAR: Two-way Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic has been restored while Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) will continue to ply one-way on Monday on the national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
The national highway, lining the Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road remained closed. Traffic remained suspended on the road between Bandipora and border town of Gurez due to slippery road conditions for the past three days.
However, traffic on Sadhna top, connecting district headquarter, Kupwara, with far flung and remote areas, including border towns of Tangdhar and Machil, has been restored after recent snow avalanche that left 11 persons, including a Beacon official dead.
We have allowed LMV traffic from Srinagar and Jammu today, a traffic police official said. However, HMV will continue to ply one-way on the highway to avoid traffic jam and accidents since road is still very narrow at several places.
Today heavy vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu, he said adding no heavy vehicle, including security force convoy, will be allowed from opposite direction on the highway.
The national highway, connecting Ladakh with Kashmir will remain closed due to snowfall and slippery road conditions, particularly between Sonamarg-Zojila pass, Zero point-Meenmarg. However, traffic from Srinagar to Sonamarg on this side of the Zojila pass and Drass-Kargil and Leh will ply subject to good weather and road condition.
Traffic on 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region will remained suspended due to accumulation of snow and slippery road condition due to below freezing temperature. Traffic could be restored on the road only after April, official sources said.
The Bandipora-Gurez road remained closed for the past three days due to slippery road conditions due to sub zero temperature, an official told UNI over phone from Bandipora.
We were planning to restore one-way traffic from today, he said adding but as the road was very slippery traffic could not be allowed. One way traffic will be allowed tomorrow only after reviewing the road condition, he said.
Meanwhile, traffic on Sadhna top, where snow avalanche killed eleven persons, last week after heavy snowfall, has been restored. The top connecting Kupwara with border areas of Machil and Tangdhar and other places was closed after heavy snowfall. The snow has been cleared and traffic restored, officials said. (AGENCIES)
