Environment education

Sir,
Ecological imbalance has become a world wide problem in today’s social set up. It may destroy life on the globe if proper measures are not taken in advance to control it. Global warming has posed threat to the existence of life in various islands and also in coastal areas of the world. The increasing deforestation has added fuel to the fire that gives rise to sudden floods and droughts. The  air pollution, contaminated water and solid waste dumped on earth are the greatest dangers for the survival. Smoke coupled with the pesticides has compounded the destruction of the ecological system. We owe responsibility for our progeny and should take measures in the right direction for the maintenance of the ecological system. The students of today must learn to rebuild and reconstruct better and healthy ecology. The need to welcome a direction given by the Supreme Court of India in December 2003 where in the direction revealed that from the academic year 2004-05 onwards Environment Subject should be taught at all stages of education. In addition to this the Environment Ministry has accorded the importance to promote evironment studies and create awareness among various age groups of the masses. Non-formal education on environment is being provided through seminars, workshops, training programmes and through audio-visual aides etc.
The future of a safe environment lies in the hands of the citizens of tomorrow. Children of today must learn to maintain a balance between development and ecology. Who can deny the importance of economic and industrial progress as a key to improving quality of life, but this  should be done by causing least harm to the environment.
Hence, Environment Science should be taught right from the primary level to university level.
Yours etc..
