KOLKATA, Dec 4: Amid growing incidents of crime against women in the country, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today said their safety must be ensured at all places.
Women need to be made a part of crucial decision-making in the country, Kumar said and praised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her ‘hard work’.
“I want to see more women in legislature. To realise their full potential at all levels, their safety must be ensured at work, home and on roads,” Kumar said at the closing ceremony of platinum jubilee of West Bengal assembly here.
Emphasising that the focus should be on women, she said, “at present their condition in society is very bad in our democracy”.
The Centre has made constitutional amendments to increase political empowerment of women through representation, she said.
The Speaker wondered how long the country, considered the world’s largest democracy, would take to become the best democracy.
Democracy must emerge “victorious, shining and uncompromised”, she said.
“It is the nature of democracy to be slow as it takes time to arrive at solutions acceptable to the majority.”
She also had a piece of advice for legislators in the state.
“When people see that their representatives are taking insults in the House and their productivity is at the lowest ebb, they are disheartened. I personally feel such acts amount to a breach of trust. They (legislators) must utilise every minute in the House,” she said. (PTI)
