Today, one career option that promises the path to sure shot success is of Engineering..Every year lakhs of students across the country take various engineering entrance exams to get admission in their desired engineering college. This leads to a whole galore of queries ranging from which test to prepare for? What score will get me which college? Which branch should I go in for?The questions are endless…
So is the wishlist…While most students aspire to study in prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology, there are many other reputed engineering colleges that feature in students’ wish list.. It is for this reason that many students take JEE to turn their dreams of studying in a prestigious engineering institute a reality.
Let us clarify all the concerns and carve a road right from the class XII to Engineering College.
What is AIEEE Exam:
The All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was an examination organized by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. Introduced in the year 2002, this national level competitive test is for admission to various under-graduate engineering and architecture courses in institutes accepting the AIEEE score, mainly 30 National Institutes of Technology.
What is JEE Exam:
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common entrance examination which is conducted for admission in various engineering courses like B.Tech, B.E, B.Arch and B.Planning under the direction of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
IIT JEE and AIEEE merged to conduct JEE from 2013 onwards:
CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has announced this common examination in place of AIEEE and IIT-JEE. JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is being conducted into two parts- JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced. JEE-Main exam is to admission in NITs (National Institute of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology), CFTIs (Central Funded Technical Institute), etc. and JEE-Advanced is for admission in IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) and the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad.
Eligibility Criteria:
Minimum Academic Qualification:
* Requires that the candidates must have passed Class XII or its equivalent.
* The candidates who are appearing in the XII exam are also eligible.
Number of Attempts:
The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at JEE (Main) are limited to 03 (three).
Mode of Examination
The Paper-1 of JEE (Main) will be conducted in two separate modes i.e. Offline (Pen and Paper Based Examination) mode and Online (Computer Based Examination) mode. The Paper-2 of JEE (Main) will be conducted only in Pen and Paper based examination mode. A candidate will opt for either Pen or Paper Based or Computer Based examination modes for Paper-1 only.
Type of Examination:
JEE (Main) – 2013 shall have two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may take Paper-1, or Paper-2, or both as per the course(s) they are seeking admission to. Subject combination for each paper, type of questions in each paper and mode of examination available is given in the table below.

The Road Ahead:
The move has been made to bring change in the current system in order to give relief to students of multiple tests by introducing a common entrance test for all these technical institutions. After result declaration of the prestigious engineering exams, your hunt for the top colleges starts. There are many fields in engineering whereyou can pursue the following B.Tech programs as per your interest and career opportunities available:
Aeronautical engineering:
This is a really demanding and challenging field. There are lots of career opportunities available in this field in India and abroad too. You can work with Defense Ministry,ISRO and can also search for options in Civil Aviation Department, National Aeronautical Laboratory, Defense Research and Development Laboratories (DRDO) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
Electrical/Electronic Engineering :
As an Electrical Engineer you would berequired to develop, design, manufacture, test, evaluate market, sell and manage electrical and electronic system. Students can find a job in public and private sector. The largest sectors which provide opportunities to students are computer, telecommunications and consumer electronics. You can also do research work in this field and they can also join defense sector.
Computer Engineering:
This is a very fast growing and dynamic field. You may be required to work with programmers, designers, product developers and testers and can work in high technology companies and they can also make their career with start-ups. Besides, you can foray in telecommunication, manufacturing, transportation, and product development sectors. Another offshoot is a job in embedded computing system for nuclear medicine, military software support and designing new motors for robotic equipment.
Mechanical Engineering:
It requires analytical skills and observation power. You can work with automobiles, space research, air conditioning, bio-mechanical industry, aeronautical industry and with manufacturing plants, oil & gas exploration and refining industries and other agricultural sectors.
Civil Engineering:
Civil engineering field opens lots of opportunities in numerous departments and sectors. They can find a job in all major construction companies or with government agencies. There are lots of opportunities of candidates in private sector too. Engineers can also find jobs with armed forces where they can contribute to the nation.
So for those of you who are still in a dilemma, just introspect gauge your skills, listen to your heart’s calling, and make it your campus calling.
