Endovascular aortic repair procedure done at SMVD Narayana Hospital

JAMMU, Nov 1: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH) has successfully repaired aortic aneurysm of an elderly patient using the latest EVAR (endovascular aortic repair) technique, which is a novel procedure used to treat aortic disease by inserting an expandable stent graft instead of opening the abdominal cavity.

This was a high-risk case and the patient did not only have aortic aneurysm, which is an abnormal bulge in the major blood vessel of the body, but also many other associated conditions, which posed a significant threat to his life. Dr Neeraj Mahajan, Consultant- Interventional Cardiologist at SMVDNSH performed the procedure along with Dr Shirish M Dhoble, Consultant-CTVS, Dr Mhd Maqbool Sohil, Consultant- Interventional Cardi-olgy and Dr Pankaj Gupta- Cardiac Anesthetist.
Informing about the successful operation during a press conference, here today, Dr Neeraj Mahajan, Consultant- Interventio-nal Cardiologist, said, “SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital is now among the few hospitals across the country, with the capability to perform such a surgery. Introduction of EVAR is testament to our continuous efforts to provide the best treatment options in the State”.
The procedure was carried out under local anesthesia and mild sedation and took less than 2 hours. The patient went home two days later and is expected to return to his normal lifestyle in less than a week. Earlier, when EVAR hadn’t been introduced, recovery time of such patients would go up by months.

EVAR has become the preferred modality of the treatment because of its several advantages, especially the shorter time for recovery.

Aortic aneurysm is a condition in which the aorta is progressively dilated, and can rupture if not diagnosed and treated at the proper time. If ruptured, it is invariably fatal.
