SRINAGAR, Aug 20: The police today foiled the protest march of the State Government employees and arrested about fifty of them, when they were marching towards Lal Chowk and then to Civil Secretariat here today.
A large number of employees from various districts of Jammu as well as from Kashmir region, under the banner of State Government Employees Joint Action Committee (SGEJAC) assembled at Press Enclave and then started protest march towards Lal Chowk. They were shouting slogans in support of their demands and also against the Government.
The employees from Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Udhampur, Jammu, Rajouri and Kathua and other parts of Jammu had already reached Srinagar on Tuesday.
Led by senior SGEJAC members Subash Verma, Suresh Sharma, Sushil Sudan, Babu Hussain Malik, K C Dubey, Farooq Ahmed, Bharat Bhushan, Mushtaq Ahmed, Irshad Beigh and others, the employees started moving towards their proposed destination- Civil Secretariat. As they reached near Lal Chowk, a strong police contingent intercepted them. The employed showed some resistance but amidst mild cane-charge, the cops packed about fifty odd employees in police vehicles and detained them in the police station. The others were made to flee.
The arrested employees including senior SGEJAC members were, however, released in the evening. The employees leaders declared that further course of action will be announced shortly in the State level meeting of the joint action committee at Jammu being held on August 25. They appealed the Government to address the pending issues of the employees including regularization, removal of pay anomalies, Pay Commission benefits to PSUs and budgetary support, enhancement of DA, medical allowance etc.
