All eyes were cast on the much awaited elections to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions in Jammu Municipal Corporation and recently through open ballot system elections were conducted. Both the top positions that of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the JMC were bagged by the BJP and with a thumping majority, the party got support of all the independent councillors as well. The other contesting Party -the Congress got just one vote in a House with 2 of its councillors having crossed over to newly floated Democratic Azad Party.
The elections took place on account of completing rather overstaying of the term of the two incumbents of Mayor and Deputy Mayor due to COVID related problems. Interestingly, since the media was not allowed to ”cover” the election proceedings and the voting conducted through open ballot system, a vote of an independent councillor carried aspirations on democracy as in his perception both the issues were unnecessary. Since the elections are over and Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected, the need to focus on the activities related to developing and keeping the entire urban area tidy, neat and with other multifarious duties it has in its charter. We expect a marked improvement on comparative basis in the functioning of the JMC.
