CAIRO, Dec 26: The first stage of the electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Sudan will be completed by the end of January 2019, the spokesman of the Egyptian electricity ministry told Xinhua on Tuesday.
“Operation tests are expected to start by the end of January 2019,” said Ayman Hamza, the spokesman of Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, noting that the cost of the project is about 6.7 million U.S. dollars.
Hamza’s remarks came following a meeting between Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker and Sudanese Minister of Water, Irrigation and Electricity Kedir Kesem in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the field of electricity.
Hamza added that the linkage line is about 100 km long, and the 100-MW transmission line in the first phase is 220 KV and will be raised to about 500 KV in the second phase.
The project comes in line with Egypt’s plan to become a regional energy hub.
Egypt has signed contracts of electricity interconnection lines with Saudi Arabia that are scheduled to begin operation in 2021 with a capacity up to 3,000 MW. The first phase is expected to start within the first half of 2019 and to begin operation in 2020 with a capacity of 1,200 MW.
Egypt is already electrically interconnected with Jordan and Libya, and it also signed a memorandum of understanding for power interconnection with Cyprus and Greece.
