SRINAGAR, Sept 4: The Committee on Environment (EC) of Legislative Assembly headed by M Y Tarigami on Tuesday directed for devising long term measures for minimizing adverse impact of different pollutants on the environment. He said that vehicles are the major contributors of air pollution and it is the duty of the concerned departments to initiate necessary measures so that harmful consequences are minimized to a large extent for the sustenance of mankind.
Legislators, Javeed Mustafa Mir, Yash Paul Kundal, Mohammad Yaseen Shah, Ashok Khajuria, Radhay Sham Sharma, Mohammad Ashraf Ganai, Dr. Shafi Ahmad Wani, Abdul Haq Khan, Sham Lal Choudhary, Lal Chand, Prof. Gharu Ram, Charanjit Singh, and Ch. Sukhnandan gave their suggestions for making Jammu and Kashmir a pollution free State.
Mr Tarigami said, “we all have to work in unison for checking environmental hazards which is necessary for our future generations.” He stressed the need for conservation and preservation of forest wealth and water bodies. The Chairman stressed upon the transport authorities to check illegal and non-registered vehicles which will reduce the pressure on roads and will help in the prevention of air pollution to a large extent.
He also stressed for strict action against the violators of traffic rules. Mr. Tarigami asked Pollution Control Board for launching drive against vehicles which violate Pollution Control Board norms.
Commissioner/Secretary, Transport Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Transport Commissioner, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, Secretary, CA & PD Mohammad Abass Dar, Chairman Pollution Control Board (PCB), Lal Chand, Deputy Inspector General of Police(Traffic), S. A. Watali briefed the Committee about the measures taken by their respective departments for making the Jammu and Kashmir pollution free State.
