The epicenter of the quake was northeast of Kabul in the Hindu Kush mountains, at a depth of 180 km as per the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
There were no immediate reports of loss of life or property in any part of the State. However, a girder of under construction Rambagh flyover fell down during the shake at Haft Chinar area of Srinagar resulting in damage to the crane.
ERA Chairman, Satish Razdan, said that the earthquake occurred when the process of tying the girders was underway and out of three girders two were already tied. “Before the engineers would have tied the third girder the earthquake shook the structure and the untied girders slipped off and fell on the crane,” he said.
The crane was parked there as there was no parking space available in the area. He said that the workers are highly professional and have, so far, mounted 403 girders without any untoward incident. “It was a routine work and incidents are bound to happen at the construction site. We cannot control nature. The structure has not suffered any damage. It’s no one’s fault,” he added.
“There were no reports of any loss due to earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir,” said Minister for Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Javaid Mustafa Mir.
