e-Rickshaw to operate soon in Jammu, Srinagar cities

JAMMU, Dec 27: Transport Commissioner, Dr. Owais Ahmed, today chaired a meeting of the Empowered Committee to discuss measures regarding augmentation of transport infrastructure in the Union Territory of J&K.
The meeting was attended by Director Garages Zakir Chowdhary, SSP Traffic Jammu Joginder Singh, Additional Secretary, Road Safety Council, Ramesh Kumar Bhat, Joint Transport Commissioner Gurmukh Singh, RTO Jammu Dhananter Singh, Chief Engineer Mechanical, Jammu Gagan Jyoti, Deputy Director Legal Metrology Manoj Prabhakar and ATC Swarn Singh.
Issues pertaining to introduction of new vehicles were taken up for discussion in the meeting wherein approval was accorded for the introduction of e-Rickshaw services in capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
The move is aimed to popularize the green mode of transport at an affordable cost to benefit the people besides generating employment opportunities for the youth across UT.
The Transport Commissioner also issued directions to the Auto Mobile Manufacturing Companies to adhere to the guidelines issued by Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and asked for delivering BS-VI vehicles across the UT of J&K with effect from April 01, 2020. He also informed that sale of BS-IV vehicles is allowed till 31st March 2020 and briefed that the new models with advance technology will increase revenue realization and will be fuel efficient, environmentally friendly.
Dr. Owais Ahmed appealed the transporters of the UT to take benefit of the recently launched Jammu & Kashmir Transport Subsidy Scheme for phasing out of their old buses, matadors, mini buses of 15 years of age. It will provide impetus to the introduction of fuel efficient public transport system and will be beneficial to the transporters also, he added.
Giving emphasis on usage of fare meters in auto rickshaws, the Transport Commissioner directed the RTOs, ARTO, Traffic Department and officers of Legal Metrology Department to organize training programmes regarding installation/calibration of fare meters in the remaining auto rickshaws.
