E-governed policing

Government has already given nod to Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) project for the State. Chief Secretary recently held the 6th meeting of CCTNS to review the progress in implementing the project. The idea is that e-governance should become a tool with the police for recording enormous volumes of information in regard to various security and other activities in the state. Digitalization is envisioned to bring about radical reform in the functioning of the Police Department especially in tracking down the crime and criminality in the State. CCTNS is a mission mode project under the national e-governance programme aimed at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing. In J&K as many as 251 sites have been commissioned under the CCTNS project including 158 Police Stations and 93 higher offices. As many as 29,566 police personnel have been technically trained under the project. The Committee was informed that out of 2.48 lakh records of 10 years, 1.87 lakh records already migrated from legacy applications of CCIS (Crime and Criminal Integration System) and CIPA (Common Integrated Police Application), while as record from manual registers is being typed and digitized.  As many as 119 Police Stations are actively feeding data and all Police Stations are communicated to lodge FIRs through CCTNS.
E-governance is bound to make police service efficient and comprehensive. With one stroke of the key, entire record can be visited. This will also control corruption to a large extent.  Modernization of the state police apparatus is necessary to handle large amount of information and huge volume of records to make service delivery of Police Department efficient.
