Sir,
This has reference to the editorial ‘Drug de-addiction policy sans implementation’ (DE, June 17, 2019).It is sad that the new drug deaddiction policy approved by the State Administrative Council (SAC) has not been implemented on ground level. There is no doubt that drug addiction is a cause of major concern for the Government as well as the society. With each passing day, there are reports of more and more youth taking to drugs which are easily made available by the drug peddlers. It is heartening to read that the Government has formulated a drug deaddiction policy but what is required is the strict implementation of the said policy to deaddict our youth who are the future custodians of the country and crackdown on the drug peddlers. These drugs are dangerous as these cause slow addiction in the youth with the result that a time comes when the youth becomes totally dependent on them.
Therefore, the drug peddlers are worse than other criminals as they intentionally spoil the life and career of the youth. The drug peddlers are having a hey time and drugs are being supplied to the innocent drug addicts causing damage to their physical and mental health. The issue of drug addiction should not be taken lightly as it involves our youth who are the future custodians of our country. They are supposed to be physically, socially, emotionally and mentally fit to contribute their mite in catapulting our beloved nation to the path of progress and prosperity. But sad as it is, drugs ruin their health and career. The sale and supply channels of drugs need to be chocked .Frequent breakdown should be launched and strict action initiated against those found guilty of drug peddlng and thus, spoiling the life and career of our youth. Moreover, fast track courts need to be set up for speedy trials of cases of drug peddling and appropriate punishment to the convicts under the law.Panchayats and civic bodies too must come forward and supplement the efforts of the Government in checking this menace by warning the youth not to fall prey to the nefarious designs of drug peddlers and identify the local drug peddlers, if any and hand them over to the police.Government ought to frame a policy whereby playgrounds are established at each Panchayat and the youth are encouraged to play games rather than take to drugs.Drug Deaddiction Centres also need to be set up at the District level in order to pull the drug addicts out of the quagmire of drugs and enable them to lead a normal life.
