JAMMU, Feb 16: Emphasising his concern as well as importance to educate young populace about the dangers of drug abuse, Dr. Sushil Sharma, HoD Cardiology GMC Jammu today conducted a day long health awareness cum check up camp at Govt Middle School, Purana Pind, RS Pura area of Jammu district.
He said that keeping in view present set of circumstances it is essential that parents, teachers and the youth themselves are educated about the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, so that they can identify it early and get the affected person help as soon as possible.
“Many abused substances, legal or otherwise, damage the heart in various ways. Prolonged use and polysubstance abuse can compound the risks associated with heart problems and cardiovascular disease. People who suffer from drug or alcohol addiction often have misaligned priorities,” he added.
During his interaction, Dr Sharma highlighted that if someone has cardiovascular disease and begins or continues to abuse substances, their condition could worsen rapidly.
“The weaker the body, the harder it is to fight illness. Even if the abused substance does not directly lead to cardiovascular disease, other negative health effects can increase the likelihood of heart problems. Other heart problems caused by substance abuse may include hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary thrombosis, congestive heart failure, hemorrhagic stroke. Many of these complications are interconnected. Abusing substances that can have negative effects on heart health in any way can raise someone’s chance of developing cardiovascular disease. Prescription opioids have also been observed to raise the likelihood of cardiovascular death with long-term use. Injection drug abuse, which may include opioids like heroin or fentanyl, has been linked to an infection of the heart called infective endocarditis”, he said.
Others who were part of this campaign include Dr Shahbaz Khan and Dr Dhaneshwar Kapoor. Paramedics and volunteers include kamal Sharma, Mohd Altaf, Gourav Heera, Sandeep Kohli, Akshay Kumar, Suresh Raina, Vikas Kumar, Maninder Singh, Anmol Singh, Raj Kumar, Manit Kumar and Rajeev Vohra.
