Dr Surinder, Dr Shakti Gupta proceed on exploratory visit

JAMMU, Dec 5: As the National Institute of Biologicals (NIB) has planned to organize for the first time Continuing Medical Education (CME) program outside the country on Haemovigilance Programme of India (HvPI)  for Blood Bank officials, a four-day exploratory visit on the same is  being  performed by Dr Surinder Singh and Dr Shakti  Kumar Gupta from tomorrow.
The CME programme is being organized by NIB in order to broaden its scope and reach outside India. It will initiate the CME in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, to begin with.
To identify the stakeholders and discuss modalities for organizing CME at National Referral Hospital, Thimphu, Bhutan, an exploratory visit to Bhutan shall be performed from December 6 to 9.  The Union Health Ministry has approved the names of Dr Surinder Singh, Director, NIB, along with Dr Shakti Kumar Gupta, Medical Superintendent of Dr R P Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, for the visit.
Like Dr Shakti Kumar Gupta, Dr Surinder Singh also belongs to Jammu. He was born at village Vijaypur in Reasi district. He did his MBBS from GMC Jammu in the year 1985, MD Microbiology from Medical College Rohtak, Haryana and Senior Residency in Microbiology from All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi. After serving in  various prestigious institutes of Medical Sciences in the country, Dr Singh is presently the Director In-charge of NIB Noida, which is the National Control Laboratory for testing of all Biologicals including Vaccines and Bio-pharmaceuticals.
Aimed at raising awareness of transfusion hazards for safety related regulatory decisions in blood safety, NIB has till date organized 24 CMEs on HvPI and trained around 4,800 participants under the CMEs in India alone. HvPI has also recently broadened its reach by adding 29 more centres under it taking the total number of centres to 236 covering the programme. HvPI is aimed at raising awareness of transfusion hazards and giving an early warning of new complications to improve safety of blood transfusion for patients.
NIB is an autonomous institution under the Union Health Ministry, which ensures quality of biologicals and vaccines in the country available through domestic manufacturers or imports.
