JAMMU, Feb 16: Dr Romil Dutt Sharma, Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon performed the first carotid artery surgery at JK Medicity, Jammu.
The patient had past history of stroke (for which he was admitted in the ICU for 1 month) and recurrent transient ischaemic attacks. The patient was admitted to the hospital for elective carotid endarterectomy after evaluation. Patient underwent carotid endarterectomy successfully and was discharged without any post-operative disability (Stroke).
Explaining the disease, Dr Romil Dutt Sharma Cardio-Thoracic Vascular surgeon said “Carotid artery disease is the disease of neck vessels carrying blood to the brain and carries high mortality and morbidity. At present either carotid artery stenting or carotid endarterectomy is the procedure option for the treatment of carotid artery disease”.
In this patient carotid endarterectomy was decided as the treatment option. The surgery carries high risk of post-operative complications such as stroke, nerve injury, fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate and reperfusion injury. The surgery was challenging in view of contra-lateral carotid artery stenosis along with coronary artery disease. In these subsets of patient rate of post-operative complications are very high.
Dr Romil Dutt Sharma further added that “Cardio Thoracic and Vascular procedures can now be performed in Jammu at an affordable cost and hence people of Jammu now don’t need to travel to metro cities for treatment”.
