KATRA, Nov 23: Dr Tej Pandita, Professor and Scientific Director, Department of Radiation Oncology, Houston Methodist, Texas (USA) visited SMVDU and delivered a talk on “DNA damage and Stem cells”.
Dr Pandita earned his PhD in Cytogenetics from Panjab University in 1980. He held faculty appointments at Columbia University in New York, Washington University in St Louis Missouri, and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas before becoming a member of the Houston Methodist Research Institute in 2014. As a member of the Cancer Research Program, he directs a research program focusing on DNA repair and radiotherapy.
He was hosted by the Department of Biotechnology, SMVDU and the talk was attended by scientists from IIIM, Jammu, Doctors from Narayana Health, faculty from SMVDCON, faculty and students from Department of Biotechnology, SMVDU.
A great amount of interest was generated by his talk as was evident from the questioning session. Dr Rakesh Kumar accompanied him for the visit to the different research labs in department of Biotechnology and Dr Pandita was very much impressed with the facilities of the department and complimented the university authorities for developing the infrastructure for research.
He also interacted with the faculty and scholars of the department. He laid stress on finding the niche areas of research and particularly collaborative and inter-disciplinary research. He had long discussion regarding the work going in the laboratory of Dr Rakesh Kumar, Assistant Professor in the department of Biotechnology and showed keen interest in collaboration and also suggested that MoU between the two institutes can be a future possibility.
