JAMMU, May 13: Dr. Nikhil Mahajan along with his team successfully performed a rare implantation of LOT – CRTD (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator) device in a post open heart patient at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Hospital, Kakryal.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with reduced heart functioning and was having symptoms of heart failure, shortness of breath and fatigue.
He underwent CRTD in the past which had failed. However, he has fully recovered after performance of the surgery.
Explaining the whole procedure Dr. Nikhil said: “Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) has widely been used in patients of symptomatic chronic Heart Failure (HF) with wide QRS complex, refractory to optimal medical therapy and having left ventricular ejection fraction.”
He further added: “However, one third of the patients are non-responders and do not respond to this therapy. Physiological pacing, i.e., His Bundle Pacing (HBP)/Left Bundle Branch Pacing (LBBP) is proving a promising alternative to Biventricular Pacing (BiVP) for some of these challenging patients, as 4th lead provides better co-ordination and results. Putting 4th lead makes the procedure much more testing and complex.”
M.M Mathawan, Facility Director at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Specialty Hospital (SMVDNSH) said: “One of the rarest of the rare surgeries has been performed at our hospital and it is now a myth that people have to travel to metro cities in India to avail world class treatment.”
“SMVDNSH is equipped with state of the art medical equipments and well qualified expert doctors to deal with any kind of medical emergency. He said that SMVDNSH has emerged as a preferred tertiary healthcare centre in North India,” he maintained.
