VIJAYPUR, Dec 17: Rejecting the compensation package of Rs 2000 crores announced by the Government for Displaced Persons (DPs) of 1947, 1965 and 1971 camp and non-camp in J&K, the DPs have warned the Government of dire consequences if the package amount was not enhanced as per the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) recommendations.
A large number of DPs attended a meeting chaired by former Minister Manjit Singh. SOS International, Chairman, Rajeev Chuni and Choudhary Partap were also present and they discussed the present package announced by the Central Government for DPs.
The participants expressed anger over the way the package is being implemented without the consultation of the DPs as they have once again being deprived of their rights. “An amount of Rs 5.5 Lakh is being given to the DPs per family and they are forced to sign documents that no further compensation would be demanded as this is full and final,” said Manjit Singh, while quoting some grievances of the DPs.
PCC general secretary further said that the Central as well as State Government has cheated the DPs who have supported them in elections with a hope that their suffering would be resolved. “They are rubbing salt to the wounds of the DPs who have suffered since decades after being uprooted from their respective land in 1947, 1965 and 1971 camp and non camp,” he added.
The previous Government had recommended Rs 25 lakh compensation for each family and also provided job reservation for DPs, Mr Singh said.
Rajeev Chuni, a prominent refugee leader said that they will continue their fight against the injustice. He also demanded compensation for camp and non-camp refugees who don’t have adequate land or have land deficiency. For land deficiency, he said, they should be given compensation and advocated reservation in jobs.
Earlier, the DPs led by Manjit Singh and Rajeev Chuni, took out procession and submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mehboob Mufti though SDM Vijaypur.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Balwant Singh Nagra, Dr BS Choudhary, Col (Retd) Swran Bhagat, Shiv Kumar Choudhary, Sukdev Choudhary and Sham Choudhary.
