Srinagar, Dec 15: At least a dozen shops were gutted today in a major blaze at Gojwara area of summer capital’s downtown neighbourhood.
Local reports said that the fire erupted in one of the shops around 2am in Gojwara Chowk and engulfed the adjacent shops in a building of the local Auqaf Committee.
Reports said that eleven shops located in the first floor of the two-storey building suffered extensive damages while a dozen others in the ground floor also suffered damages due to water. They said the cause of fire was being ascertained by police.
In the blaze, property worth crores of rupees was destroyed. Meanwhile, Fire and Emergency (F&ES) Department officials praised the locals for helping the firemen to prevent fire from spreading to adjacent houses. “Had not the locals extended their help, the losses would have been much,” they said.
