DoP to organise photo exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi, open new post offices

JAMMU, Sept 18: Department of Posts will organise a four-day photo exhibition on the life of Mahatma Gandhi in Winter Capital city here from October 1 on the eve of birth anniversary of Father of Nation.
“We will organise four-day portrait and photo exhibition on the life of Mahatma Gandhi in Kala Kendra here from October 1,” Chief Postmaster General, John Samuel told reporters here today. He said the exhibition will conclude on October 4.
He said the exhibition will be open for school children, college students and general public.
“We want everybody to come and see the life and teaching of Mahatma Gandhi,” he said.
Mr Samuel said that largest number of commemorative stamps have been issued on Mahatma Gandhi across the world. Stamps at display in the exhibition will be a treat to watch as 150 framers of stamps depicting various aspects of Mahatma Gandhi’s life will be on display at the exhibition. The exhibition will enlighten the younger generation about the Gandhi and his philosophy. The stamps at display will depict relevance of Gandhi to the present day world, he added.
During the exhibition various activities and competitions like stamp design, letter writing , Gandhi Look alike , Quiz show, lecturers and symposiums are being organized in association with various Gandhian associations, schools and colleges of Jammu city.
John Samuel further said that keeping in view the transformation of postal services in J&K, a project for transformation has been launched. Already five main post offices  have been modernized and dedicated to public of Jammu, he added.
He said all the post offices of Jammu will be brought under this project and soon Vinaik Bazar, Talab Tillo, Sainik Colony and Channi Himmat post office will be modernized and dedicated to the people of Jammu. Gold coin service has also been introduced in Jammu Cantonment Post Office , effective from September 17 this year.
He said all the 40 post offices in Jammu will be modernized in 2012-2013 and these modernized post offices will be like modern banks. He also informed that in order to improve the efficiency of work force, Department of Posts is augmenting the staff strength and 49 new postal assistants and 175 gramin Dak Sevaks are being recruited during this year.
He said Department of Posts will open new Post Office in Prem Nagar Gujjar Nagar area, Jagti Township and Halka Marh in Jammu. It has also entered an agreement with Jammu University for training its work force by imparting training in change management and customer relations by the faculty of Jammu University.
