Refer news item ‘Surge in domestic violence against women in Kashmir’ DE Aug 25. It is quite disturbing that there has been no let up in domestic violence in the State despite existence of so many laws to prevent it. The surge in domestic violence cases indicates that our social set up is witnessing rapid degeneration. The values and philosophy that preached respect for fellow beings, especially women folk are losing their importance. Emphasis is rather laid on materialistic approach to life.
Mere enactment of legislations to curb this menace is not going to address the issue. There is need to take recourse to religious and social doctrines that advocate equality and mutual respect for each other. The social thinkers must intervene to ascertain the causes, and suggest measures to contain this violence which is assuming alarming proportions as per the data in the news report.
