JAMMU, Jan 23: Awarded Dogri play ‘Urubhangam’ by ‘Natraj Natya Kunj’ will be staged at Kumbh Mela-2019.
A handout stated that national and international performances from India as well as from abroad will be presented under the name of ‘Sanskriti Kumbh’ programme organised jointly by UP and Central Governments at Kumbh Mela.
A team of 18 artists of ‘Natraj Natya Kunj’ will leave for Prayagraj on Jan 29 to present the play on Jan 31 at ‘Sarasvati Manch.’
It is pertinent to mention here that Kumbh Mela is one of the oldest and largest congregations in the world.
The significance of Kumbh Mela has been enhanced at the Global level as the UNESCO has inscribed Kumbh Mela on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage for Humanity in 2017.
Originally written by Mahakavi Bhaas the play ‘Urubhangam’ is adapted in Dogri by Kumar A. ‘Bharti’, designed by Abhishek Bharti and directed by Aaditya Bharti and is one of the oldest surviving Sanskrit plays, written by Bhasa in the second-third century AD.
It is inspired by the description of the last war in the great Indian epic Mahabharata.
President of the Theatre Group, Kumar A ‘Bharti’ told reporters that it is for the first time that a Dogri play will be staged at Kumbh Mela. It is a matter of great pride for Dogras, Dogri language and theatre here that Dogri play is going to be presented in such a big event, Kumar added.
