JAMMU, Mar 31: All the doctors and paramedics in all the Government hospitals across Jammu Division held ‘Black Band’ protest today in order to show solidarity towards Dr Archana Sharma (Gyane & Obstetrics) who committed suicide in Rajasthan after being harassed by the local police.
Briefing about the tragic incident, Doctors Association Jammu (DAJ) president Dr Balvinder Singh stated that a 22-year old female patient who was pregnant for the 4th time died during delivery because of the post partum hemorrhage (condition where uterus fail to contract) despite utmost patient care and proper treatment by Dr Archana.
He said following the incident, Dr Archana was continuously being harassed by the attendants of deceased and Rajasthan police and even an FIR was lodged against her without any enquiry. She could not take the pressure and committed suicide, he added and demanded magistrate probe into the case and also termination of concerned SHO and SP who compelled a young dynamic and enthusiastic doctor to commit suicide.
Dr Manjit Singh, DAJ vice president, expressing his grief over this unfortunate incident said that it’s not only a great loss to family but to nation as well where trained Gynecologists are not enough in number to cater to the women of child bearing age. He also condemned the irresponsible behaviour of SHO Rajasthan who charged Dr Archana with murder under Section 302 of IPC.
Dr Amit and Dr Mukhtyar Khan, Secretaries DAJ laid down stress on following the guidelines of Supreme Court of India which clearly states that no FIR can be registered against a doctor just because a patient has not survived, until the negligence in the case is proved by the team of specialists.
