SRINAGAR, May 11: The doctors at a private Nursing Home, the City Hospital, Srinagar, abandoned the laparoscopic cholecystectomy of a patient after they found adhesion.
Syed Zubeida, a resident of Peerbagh was diagnosed with gall stones and was advised by the doctors for cholecystectomy. Following this the lady was admitted at the City Hospital on May 9 and some of the investigations were carried out.
Dr Mohammad Shafi Ladakhi told Excelsior that after the investigations of the patient laparoscopic cholecystectomy was advised for her. “When we were conducting the laparoscopic cholecystectomy we found adhesion and stopped the process. If we could have gone ahead with the process it could have proven fatal for the patient”, said Dr Ladakhi. He said that investigations conducted on the patient couldn’t show the adhesion as such cases are rare. The surgery was stopped to save the patient’s life, he added.
The son of the patient, Syed Tajamul, however, told Excelsior: “My mother was admitted and following this some of the tests were carried out. The doctors said that the surgery would be carried out on Thursday (May 10). We made all the preparations and my mother was mentally ready for the surgery. The surgery was supposed to be carried early in the morning at 6:30 AM.”
He said that on Thursday two doctors of the City Hospital, Dr. Zakir and Dr. Mohammad Shafi Ladakhi, turned up at 6:30 a.m. and asked for the patient to be shifted to the operation theatre for surgery. After 15 minutes both the doctors came out and said that the surgery cannot be carried out.
Tajamul said that his mother was un-conscious since she was administered anesthesia and her abdomen was cut only to be stitched later on. The situation turned tense in the hospital as the attendants of the patients raised strong protest and demanded action against the two doctors.
“The hospital authorities instead of taking action against the doctors discharged my mother in the evening. Later on I showed my mother to three doctors and they too were dismayed with the attitude of the doctors of City Hospital. The health authorities should look into this so that such horrendous blunders are not repeated,” said Tajamul.
Director Health Services Kashmir, Dr. Saleem-ur-Rehman said that he would get the details about the case and then decide only what action can be taken. He asked the attendants of the patient to get in touch with him so that the surgery is carried out in a government hospital.
