UDHAMPUR, Aug 8: District Magistrate, Udhampur, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary has expressed serious concern about rumors and false news spread by some persons through Social Media particularly on WhatsApp which have potential of threatening the law and order and security of State.
He has issued directions for strict monitoring of content on social media and appropriate action against rumor mongers.
Some people have been constantly updating on WhatsApp groups about reports of 200 militants sneaking in, high alert declared in Udhampur, sighting of terrorists, capturing of terrorists in some areas, reports of encounter, feared attacks, emergency, closure of schools and so on.
“This tendency has been viewed very seriously and more than a dozen Whatsapp news groups have been put on scanner by district administration to pin point such persons who are involved in this rumor mongering and creating panic among people”, the DM said, adding “persons sharing such information will be held responsible for consequences and legal action will be initiated”.
He has asked the police to keep a vigil on social media and initiate action against culprits. Media personnel have also been advised to verify the information from the District Magistrate, SP or PCR before updating on social media.
A general advisory has also been issued for the public advising not to indulge in unlawful activities by spreading such false information
