UDHAMPUR, Nov 19: A team of District legal Services Authority (DLSA), Udhampur today conducted a surprise inspection of the police stations of the district and took stock of their working.
On the directions of Chief Justice Gita Mittal, patron in chief of J&K State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) and Chairman, DLSA Udhampur, Mohan Lal Manhas, Sandeep Kour, Sub Judge, Secretary, DLSA Udhampur along with Mohd Rafiq Chak, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Chairman, Tehsil Legal Services Committee (TLSC) Udhampur conducted surprise visit of Udhampur, Rehmbal and women police station of Udhampur.
The main aim of inspection was to check whether guidelines given by Supreme Court regarding police stations are being followed or not as police station is the main unit to drive the reforms.
During the visit, the team pointed out multiple shortcomings including laxity in proper record keeping. The team also summoned record books including ‘Rojnamcha (Daily police dairy), records of FIR etc. The team also inspected Mess, Hawalat (strong room) and urinals of police stations and pointed out insanitary conditions in urinals of police stations.
The DLSA team also interacted with detunes lodged in different police stations and check their record whether they are in custody or on remand. The team also checked absconder and proclaimed offenders register.
Taking strong note of various shortcomings in police stations during its visit, the team directed police officers to follow the guidelines given by Supreme Court in the case of D K Basu versus State of West Bengal during the arrest, detention and interrogation of any person.
The team also gave on spot directions to concerned Station House Officers (SHOs) to overcome lacunas in their respective police stations in stipulated time frame.
