JAMMU, Mar 7: Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Shantmanu convened a high level meeting with airport authorities to discuss various environmental related issues.
Interacting with the officers, the Divisional Commissioner deliberated upon the issues creating environmental hazard thus posing risk to flight safety. The main issues discussed threadbare included unauthorized slaughtering being carried out in village Govindpura falling in the cantonment board area and piggery running within the cantonment board posing serious environmental hazard as these activities being carried out in the close vicinity of airport attract birds activities.
Sewerage channel passing through airfield (crossing the take off at run way 36 end) and another rivulet carrying untreated sewage crossing the undershoot of runway 36 need to be rerouted well outside the airfield area to combat bird menace and risk to flight safety and indiscriminate dumping of MSW including dead bodies of animals at nearby areas.
Asserting that dumping of garbage and other waste material in close vicinity of airport is posing serious environment hazard, Shantmanu said that this also makes the sites around the airport as breeding and nesting sites for birds thereby enhancing bird hazards as well as increasing pollution risk.
He directed the Jammu Municipal Corporation to constitute squads for conducting survey of the areas around the airport and check the dumping of garbage and other waste material and also provide dustbins wherever necessary. He also assured to discuss other related issues with UEED, and security agencies so as to minimize the environmental hazards and ensure flight safety.
