Disqualification of convicted legislators

Sir,
This is in reference to the news item “Person in jail can’t contest polls-SC (Daily Excelsior, July 12, 2013). The land mark judgment of the Supreme Court providing for immediate disqualification of MPs, MLAs & MLCs to hold membership in Parliament and legislatures if convicted in criminal cases will go a long way in ridding our polity of the pervasive criminality that has unfortunately infected it.
This path breaking judgment is a step in the right direction to discriminalise Indian politics. MPs and MLAs are the public representatives and they should serve as role models for the masses but it is sad and unfortunate that a large number of criminals have found their way into the portals of our legislatures. They face criminal charges such as murder, rape and dacoity and thus public trust in the political system is eroded. In no case, the law breakers should be permitted to function as law makers and criminals don’t deserve any sympathy. The sterling judgement delivered by the Apex Court of India is a ray of hope for freeing the politics from the criminals and help in restoring people’s trust in the political system of our nation.
Yours etc…
