While we ought to have aspired for less of generation of waste , unfortunately a new one and of a serious nature has emerged that of Corona virus related generated waste, a new challenge of course in respect of how to dispose it off. National Green Tribunal has stepped in with respect to its disposal in a scientific way so that there remained no threat of any spread of infections and other problems.
In this connection , a team comprising the Centre and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is to supervise handling and scientific disposal of Covid-19 waste in accordance with the guidelines. Do we have adequate capacity and resources to handle , store, transport , manage and finally dispose the new type of generated waste is not that important as it is how it is presently managed and finally disposed. The job done by the concerned team is both challenging , trying and fraught with all sensitivities. Kudos to such teams across the country. However, a bench headed by NGT Chairperson has directed the Chief Secretaries of the states and the UTs to closely monitor the scientific handling and disposing of the waste material in accordance strictly with the issued guidelines. The consolidated report too in respect of the job is sought to be submitted latest by June 15.
