Sir,
We know that natural disasters can strike us any time. Although, technology has made some progress and issues us warning before a disaster strikes us but still many disasters come without any prior warning. Some of these disasters are so severe in intensity, that they leave millions dead, homeless and injured. The loss to property and economy is too big and it takes decades to reconstruct the damaged property.
However, the loss of precious human lives during emergencies and disasters is the greatest loss. This loss of human lives is due to the reason that nations, societies and individuals are not sensitized/trained regarding preparedness and responding quickly and effectively to the emergencies. Concerned over it–the United Nations took cognizance of this fact and decided to play a lead role in shaping and making disaster resilient socieites and individuals, who can respond to disasters intelligently, skillfully and with greater maturity.
Recently, all Chief Education Officers of Jammu and Kashmir had directed all schools falling under their jurisdiction to submit detailed safety plans of their schools. It is a wonder idea. All schools had an opportunity to assess their potential hazards and formulate a practical and workable plan of action during emergencies.
Moreover, all schools were directed to celebrate their annual school safety day on any day and month of their choice.
Recently, our school celebrated school safety day. The students performed mock drills of rescue operations during earthquakes, fire incidents and other disasters.
I congratulate UNO for taking up this huge and humanitarian exercise. I am sure that international disaster losses are only going to be minimum in the near future.
Yours etc…
