Disabled persons protest, demand redressal of issues

SRINAGAR, Feb 26: Several persons with disabilities today held a protest rally here demanding attention of the Government towards their long pending issues.
A number of disabled persons associated with different organizations appeared at Press Enclave and started marching towards city centre Lalchowk.
The protesters were shouting slogans against the Government and demanded that the issues pertaining to the disabled persons of the Valley should be redressed.
The protesters alleged that medical board, through which disability certificates are issued, has issued fake disability certificates to some malicious people who take benefit of the certificates in grabbing various Government jobs under disability quota. “About 300 fake disability certificates were issued in the Bandipora district and all this is happening because mechanism of certificates is not an accountable task,” they alleged.
The protesters demanded that there should be barrier free buildings made in the State where disabled persons can go without any obscurity. “Accessibility is the biggest issue for the disability sector. All the Government buildings, transport and railways should be barrier free for us,” they said.
They also demanded that Government should provide special employment drive for educated and eligible persons with disabilities so that they can get their due as guaranteed by J&K Persons With Disabilities Act 1998.
They appealed authorities to pass the Rights for Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act 2018 so that they should not suffer and be discriminated.
