Dirty city

Sir,
This has reference to the Sunday Magazine article ‘Jammu as “Dirtiest City’ DE May 29.
While going through the article, one really felt pained that Jammu, the beautiful city has been ranked one among the dirtiest cities.
It is a reflection of Jammu Municipal Corporation’s inability to maintain the cleanliness of the city. It may be mentioned here that Jammu is a pilgrimage destination visited by lakhs of pilgrims every year. Tourists  who throng to other parts of the State  have to pass through this city. One wonders what sort of impression of the city they would carry with them when they would go home while passing through dirty lanes and broken roads of the city.
The authorities should have paid special attention to city’s cleanliness. One does not squarely blame the authorities for this ugly scene, residents too are indifferent to this phenomenon. They do not mind throwing garbage here and there. Every inch of land is a dustbin for them. Shopkeepers instead of disposing garbage scientifically, dump it in drains which get choked, and in course of time, they flow onto the road surfaces creating offensive scences here and there.
Unless citizens understand this responsibility, the sanitary conditions in the city won’t improve.
Yours etc…
