Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President has taken the right decision of withdrawing his name as presidential candidate. He has had one full term as President and will always be remembered for grace and dignity which he brought to that high office. Last when he became the consensus candidate, the world appreciated India’s choice of a scientist-statesman as her new President. For an illustrious son of the soil who in his right deserved to have been gracefully offered second term, but was not, contesting the election is not the way. He is an institution by himself and not just an individual. Our history will record in poignant words that by disallowing him the second term as President, the nation was deprived of theoretical wisdom of a philosopher and practicable vision of a scientist. How long shall we have to remain the prisoners of political pygmies? Dr. Kalam belongs to the nation and her history if not to the Raisina Hills.
