JAMMU, Oct 28: Illogically, where the Government and the Health Department are claiming to provide super specialty treatment to the patients, the dialysis unit in the Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar went out of order, thereby putting the life of patients at stake.
Official sources told the EXCELSIOR that, to cater the needs of the patients, the dialysis unit was inaugurated at Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar early this year.
After its smooth functioning for months together, the unit is presently non-functional, due to non-availability of the concerned doctors (Nephrologists).
“Purchased at a cost of around Rs 30 lakh, the dialysis machine was not put to use after the transfer of the concerned doctor recently, thereby putting the life of patients at stake”, sources maintained.
Earlier, only one doctor was examining and operating the dialysis patients in the Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar and he has been transferred and posted at District Hospital, Kathua, thereby making the unit defunct”, sources informed.
Specialized doctors are required for the functioning of dialysis unit and there is shortage of the same in the Health Department, which might have been the reason behind the non-functioning of the unit, sources added.
Talking to the EXCELSIOR, one of the attendants of the dialysis patient said that “we had visited the Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar for dialysis and found the unit locked, which has created manifold problems for us”.
When enquired, it came to fore that the doctor, who was examining the dialysis patients has been transferred to some other Government Hospital, he added.
“If the dialysis machine was not put to use or the Health Department can’t make doctors available for the smooth functioning of the unit, then why they were spending huge amount for the purchase of such costly machines”, they added.
When contacted, Dr BS Pathania, Director Health Services (DHS), admitted that the dialysis unit is non-operational in the Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar.
He said that the due to the shortage of the concerned doctors, the unit has become non-operational, adding that it will be made functional shortly with the posting of the concerned doctors.
