JAMMU, Dec 18: Staged on the fourth day of ongoing Annual Drama Festival, the Hindustani play ‘Dhaed Roti’ was presented by Hardeep Dance & Cultural Society, on the fourth day of Annual Drama Festival at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
The play written by Sat Pal Sharma and directed by Rakun, short for Rajinder Kumar Narang revolves around one originally kind hearted Chandan who turns a hardened criminal and a drunkard after wrongly jailed for a crime he did not commit. Misreading the intimacy of Sushma, his grown up daughter, with the young writer Pradeep, whom he had given shelter, the incensed Chandan Singh throws out noble writer. Another criminal Shanker, after getting Chandan drunk, tries to molest Sushma. She is saved by deaf & dumb, who is, in fact, a CID Inspector. Chandan, after coming to know the misdeed of Shankar murders him. When Pradeep, takes the blame of Shankar’s murder on himself, Chandan speaks the truth in court and fearing a lenient view by the court, request for the death penalty and takes out a revolver. He is killed by a security personal.
The highlight of today’s play was the return to the theater of old actors like Rajinder Kumar Narang in the role of Chandan Singh and Subhash Jamwal as Shankar, Shashi Bhushan as Pradeep and Rakesh Kumar as deaf & dumb and CID inspector, Anvi Jain as Sushma gave good performances.
But their hard work in today production was let down by the choice of script, which smacked of an old film plot wherein the inherent goodness in human beings triumphs despite the unjust machination of society.
The courtroom set was well designed, light design barring selective sequences where spots were used, was generally a full-lit affair which gave a kind of continuity to the otherwise long-drawn scenes.
Other actors were Shishupal Khajuria, Ajay Kumar, Anjana Padwal, Atin Tikka, Umar Qureshi, Ajay Sharma, Puneet Gupta and Parveen Kumar. Music by Surinder Manhas, lights by Pankaj and Suraj Ganjoo, sound by Lokesh and costumes by Hardeep Singh Chib.
Tomorrow Kashmiri play Chapare Yee Gash, directed by Rakesh Roshan will be staged by Vemedh Rangmanch.
