JAMMU, May 4: A delegation of the District Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC), Kathua, called on the Deputy Commissioner, Kathua, Rajesh Sharma and demanded the implementation of the Anand Karaj Marriage Act 1909 in the district.
During the meeting, the delegation highlighted that the Anand Karaj Marriage Act, originally enacted in 1909 and later amended in 2012 by the Central Government, provides legal recognition to Sikh marriages performed through the traditional Anand Karaj ceremony. The amendment also allows separate registration of Sikh marriages, thereby preserving the distinct religious identity of the Sikh community.
The members of DGPC Kathua expressed strong concern that, despite the Act being applicable in many parts of India, its proper implementation has not yet been carried out in Jammu & Kashmir, including Kathua district. They termed this delay as a matter of serious concern for the Sikh community residing in the region.
The delegation emphasized that the absence of implementation creates practical and legal difficulties for Sikh couples, who are often compelled to register their marriages under other laws, which do not fully represent their religious customs and traditions.
Raising their voice collectively, DGPC Kathua conveyed their resentment over this disparity and urged the district administration to take immediate steps to ensure that the provisions of the Anand Karaj Marriage Act are enforced in Kathua. They further requested that necessary administrative directions be issued so that Sikh marriages can be registered under this Act without any delay.
The Deputy Commissioner assured the delegation that the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities for appropriate action.
The DGPC Kathua expressed hope that their demand will be addressed at the earliest, ensuring justice and rightful recognition of Sikh matrimonial traditions in the district.
